High School Mentoring

This program serves 9th through 12th graders. We are working in partnership with the Fontana Unified School District at the following schools: Fontana High School, A.B. Miller High School, Jurupa Hills High School, Kaiser High School, and Summit High School. We work with students to make sure they're fulfilling the A-G requirements and are on the track to graduate. We also help them define their goals and show them the steps they can take after high school to reach those goals. We are in need of mentors that are currently attending or have graduated from a 4-year university, community college or trade school. Mentors will make a commitment of meeting with one or more students for about an hour to an hour and a half after school weekly or biweekly to help them prepare for college or a career.

Adult School Mentoring

Because this program works with students at the Fontana Adult School (FAS), the CalPREP Program will run a little differently than the rest of the school sites. FAS students are more likely to be parents, part workforce, and/or hoping to move onto higher education. The students are quite intimidated by the next step in life and authority figures in the workforce. Many times they have been told they “messed up,” so they fear failure and embarrassment. They face the unknown but want to be useful in their community.

The students will be grouped by career interest and availability. We hope to focus on helping students with resumes, cover letters, mock interviews, job and volunteer opportunities, and college/career planning. This would include workshops that will allow students to know more about financial aid, planning and resources; fairs that will bring local college, career technical schools, and military branches; and presentations by professionals in the workforce and immigration services.
